Real Partners Uganda – “Christmas in September”

In the town of Lukaya, Uganda, where Mustard Seed Academy provides care and education for 355 children - most very poor and orphaned - Christmas is a difficult time. Schools are closed for nearly two months vacation and the children will not receive the meals that are provided by the school. Parents and guardians simply cannot provide the extra care and food in most households.

Two years ago, Real Partners Uganda began working with local leaders at Tree of Life Ministries to start a fund-raising program called "Christmas in September." At that time, in 2009, there were 150 students at Mustard Seed Academy and a goal was set to provide a gift package for each student. The packages contained beef, rice, beans, bread, margarine, sugar, salt and soap. This provided not just one meal but a few meals for each family. The town's people were so grateful that they were still buzzing about it when Joe and Elaine Griswold arrived in February.

This program began in the Community Presbyterian Church in Brigantine. Last year the Pleasantville Presbyterian Church joined in the effort. This year our Absecon Presbyterian Church has been invited to assist in this project because there now are 355 children and 24 full-time staff members. Real Partners Uganda would like to provide packages for each of them.

The cost of each gift package is $9.00. A package will include beef, rice, beans, margarine, sugar, salt, bread, and soap. This is enough for a family Christmas celebration with some left over.A check for $45 provides a wonderful Christmas for five families and only $27 will feed three families, but any amount will be gratefully accepted. Our gifts alleviate hunger and are a powerful witness of God's love for the "least of these."

If you can help out with this wonderful project, we ask that checks be written to the Absecon Presbyterian Church and designated for Christmas Uganda on the memo line.October 23rd is the deadline to ensure that our donations arrive in time for the event to be organized in Uganda.

Addicted2Jesus (A2J)

A heartfelt thank you to those who purchased our caramel apples last week!  A2J exceeded our goal and raised $27 for Christmas in September – enough to provide for three families.

Mrs. Gillis completed both the application on behalf of A2J as well as the interview verification process for Adopt-A-Platoon.  The first campaign that A2J is participating is Halloween Treats…For the TROOPS.  Our first assignment is a Chaplain in Afghanistan.  He will receive our packages and distribute the treat bags as well as letters to individual soldiers.  WE NEED YOUR HELP!  There are two ways you can assist A2J:

  1. 1.    Donate bag(s) of individually wrapped candy, gum, and chocolate.  Did I mention chocolate? There will be a collection box in Madden Hall on Sunday. The troops have been without chocolate since April as a ban was in effect until Oct. 1 due to the excessive heat in the country.
  2. 2.    Write a letter, note or card to a soldier.  Some soldiers receive little to no mail from the states so we would like to include as many letters in the boxes as possible.  You may identify yourself and provide an address or email for a reply, but realize where we are supporting; they may not be able to reply.  If you would like to include an addressed envelope for the reply, do not include a stamp as it is not needed from APO addresses.

Each A2J member is donating 2 bags of candy and a letter.  The boxes are being provided for free from the USPS and The Law Office of Borden Gillis is donating the packing material and cost of postage for our packages.  A big Thank You from A2J to Mr. Gillis.

Purpose Driven Life Study Offered in late October

Have you ever wondered “What on earth am I here for?”  Rick Warren’s book The Purpose Driven Life uses scripture to help us make sense of this question and to challenge us to discover our true path in this life.

Beginning Sunday, October 23, we will offer a 6 week study of The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren.   This will take place during the Sunday school hour, between 9-10am in the Cobb Lounge and is open to all.   It will be a video-based study narrated by Warren himself, along with discussion questions.  Reading the book is suggested, but not required.    Lucy Jerue will be the facilitator for this study.  There is no charge, but those interested are asked to sign up on the sheet provided in the hallway area.   Plan on joining us as we embark on this journey of discovery!
