“Glory, glory, glory to the Lamb. Glory, glory, glory to the Lamb. For he is glorious and worthy to be praised, the Lamb upon the throne; and unto him we lift our voice in praise, the Lamb upon the throne.” ~ “Glory to the Lamb” by Larry Dempsey (Hymn 103)

In these first days of Lent…

We are called to repentance. We are called to prepare. We are called to remember. We are called.

These tasks are not easy. The voice of one cries out in the wilderness, “Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.” But how do we do this?

To prepare a place for God we must open ourselves to the holy mystery of God. As we are called, may we, too, respond.

Come experience the presence of God.

Pastor will be speaking from Matthew 4:1-11.

“Yet even now, says the Lord, return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; rend your hearts and not your clothing. Return to the Lord, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love, and relents from punishing.” - Joel 2:12-13a

Rend your hearts and not your clothing, says God to the people of Judah. Wow. God is just like a real human parent sometimes. Children frequently miss the point of “sorry” and parents have to teach them about their mistake. “I’m not upset that you broke it, but that you didn’t obey me when I told you not to touch it,” they explain.

Sometimes we miss our real mistake. We’re blind to and even ignore the real injury, making our contrition superficial and hollow. We get distracted by things that make us feel better, but don’t heal or reconcile the rift in our relationships. Jesus spoke like a parent to the religious leaders in the Gospel of Matthew. Don’t clean the outside of the bowl and plate and leave the inside full of brokenness and sin. Clean the inside first, so that the outside may become clean. In other words, rend your hearts and not your clothing.
