“Open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Jesus, to reach out and touch him, and say that we love him. Open our ears, Lord, and help us to listen, open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Jesus.” ~ “Open Our Eyes” by Bob Cull (Hymn 491)

No Easy Way – Read John 6:53-69

When Jesus fed the crowds, he met their physical needs and they thronged around him. But when Jesus spoke of spiritual things and the sacrifices required to walk the narrow path of righteousness, the people and their religious leaders became confused and troubled. Some of his disciples even turned back and no longer traveled with him.

Like them, I sometimes have difficulty with the demands of Jesus' teachings. I slip into the trap of seeking only the good things offered by the Christian faith, the assurance of grace and forgiveness, the joy of communal worship and Christian fellowship. I want to forget the Christ who claims me and calls me to make difficult choices. Yet when I try to live as Christ wants me to, I often find unexpected peace and joy. I taste eternal life. Jesus' example calls us always to remember that the road to resurrection went through Calvary.
