“O let the Son of God enfold you with his Spirit and his love. Let him fill your heart and satisfy your soul. O let him have the things that hold you, and his Spirit like a dove will descend upon your life and make you whole. Jesus, O Jesus, come and fill your lambs. Jesus, O Jesus, come and fill your lambs.” ~ “Spirit Song” by John Wimber (Hymn #352)

Come to worship Sunday and be filled.  Pastor will be speaking from 2 Timothy 3:14-4:5.

A Church That Cares

Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. - 1 John 3:18

If generosity became a way of life for the church you attend, what might it look like? Widows, single parents, and children of divorce would benefit from love that is expressed in practical and relational ways. Programs would focus on bringing the healing message of Christ to broken hearts. Every parishioner would feel valued for his or her gifts and encouraged to use those gifts. New ministries would develop as members saw opportunities for expressing love to those in need.

A few years ago the church where I serve began to explore ways we could love our city more effectively. We now provide weekend snacks to elementary schoolchildren who live in an impoverished neighborhood. In the fall we provide backpacks and school supplies to the same students. Other church members minister to local prisoners and their families.

At a growing church I visited in Arkansas, members created a career-link workshop to train and assist the unemployed and underemployed. Classes focused on résumé preparation, job-interview skills, career-path planning, budgeting, job-search strategies, and overcoming employment barriers. Then the church got creative about other ways to give—grilling hot dogs at an apartment complex, delivering lunches to kids, helping elderly neighbors with home maintenance.

When a church chooses to be generous in loving others, the opportunities are unlimited.

Dr. Gary Chapman
