Giving Freely - Read Luke 21:1-4

Recently, I helped to collect the offering at my church. As I passed the basket from one row to the other, I noticed that the adults dropped their money into the basket almost mechanically, but the children were very eager. One boy nearly fell over in the pew as he tried to extend his short, chubby arm to put his crumpled bill in the fast-moving basket! I began to think about my own attitude toward giving. Am I so stretched financially that the joy of making my contribution, however small, is nonexistent? Do I leap at the chance to put my offering in the basket, or do I drop it in mechanically? Is my giving a joyful sacrifice or a scheduled chore? Do I equate giving with praising God?

When we think of giving to God, all too often we think of something painful and difficult. But even the smallest contribution to the community is cause for celebration. God has given us many gifts, including money. To be able to use them for good work is a blessing.

I want to remember to praise God each time I give my time, energy, or money and to keep my childlike joy in the privilege of giving freely.
